SUMMARY:Biblical Turkey
DESCRIPTION:March 8-20\, 2026Tour Host: Dr. Kenneth Cuffey\nDownload the brochure here. \nApplication Form \nUrbana Seminary’s Training through Travel is delighted to announce a new trip to the lands of the Bible. This March 8-20\, 2026\, you can join us for a trip through Turkey to see Biblical sites. \nDid you know that there are so many Bible-related sites in Turkey that the country is often referred to as the “second Holy Land”? This Bible Lands trip is designed to deepen your ability to read the Bible better to hear from God—in reality\, it’s a discipleship trip\, giving you tools for envisioning the world of the Bible and understanding what God was doing. \nWhat We’ll See \nBiblical Turkey 2026 will give you a panoramic view of the growth of the early church in the period of AD 50-100! We will travel to Antioch to see the city and its harbor—the site where the Gentiles were first part of the intentional ministry of the early preachers and evangelists\, where Peter came and preached\, where Barnabas and Paul were commissioned for their first Missionary Journey. We’ll visit Tarsus to ponder Paul’s origins. As we travel West\, we will follow in the footsteps of Paul’s first\, second\, and third Missionary Journeys. \nIn Ephesus\, we will consider the amazingly preserved remains of the city where both Paul and John had extended ministry. Imagine sitting in the huge theater of Ephesus to consider all that God did there through his apostles\, as well as reconstruct in our minds the raucous riot that took place right where we will be sitting! Did you know that early church tradition says that John brought Jesus’ mother\, Mary\, here after Jerusalem was destroyed in AD 70? \nThen we turn North and visit the seven Churches of Revelation. This lets us go deeper into what these sites and their history can teach us about what the Book of Revelation is all about. Why did John write a book like this? You’ll also get the chance to enjoy Istanbul and the history of the early church\, as well as some unexpected Old Testament connections! So much to see and so much for each of us as we grow in Christ! \n— \nThe trip Includes – Roundtrip international air from Chicago– Istanbul – Adana domestic flight– 1 Night at Grand Halic Hotel in Istanbul or similar– 2 Nights at The Museum Hotel in Antioch or similar– 1 Night at Anemon Hotel in Konya or similar– 2 Nights at Best Western Khan Hotel in Antalya or similar– 1 Night at Doga Thermal Hotel in Pamukkale or similar– 1 Night at Korumar Hotel in Kusadasi or similar– 3 Nights at Kordon Cankaya Hotel in Izmir or similar– Daily open buffet breakfasts– 11 dinners– Licensed English Speaking Biblical oriented Guide throughout the itinerary– Private Bus with driver throughout the itinerary– One group transfer on arrival and departure– Entrance fees to all sites– Headsets– Tolls & parking fees– Service charges and local taxes \nContact: Dee Hoiem\, dietlind.hoiem7@gmail.com \n\n

SUMMARY:Taste of Seminary 2025
DESCRIPTION:A Taste of Seminary: Christian Perspectives on Faith\, Culture\, and Contemporary Issues \nHave you ever wanted to explore contemporary cultural issues from a Christian perspective? Want to experience a lecture and discover what our professors have to offer? A Taste of Seminary is for you! \nHeld at the Stratford Park Bible Chapel (2801 w. Kirby ave\, Champaign)\, Taste of Seminary will feature four free lectures followed by Q and A. And even if you’ve taken courses with us before\, you won’t want to miss this year’s lecture lineup that includes something for everyone. \nTuesday\, 2/18:\nC. S. Lewis and George MacDonald: Exploring the Influence (Dr. Melody Green) \n\nIn several places\, C. S. Lewis described the Scottish author and pastor George MacDonald as having an important influence on his faith and writings. This presentation will explore those connections. \n\nTuesday 2/25:\nPsalm 104: Celebration of God as a Foundation for Creation Care (Dr. Ken Cuffey) \n\nPsalm 104 offers a rousing celebration of our God as seen in his role of Creator of the world of nature. Consideration of the coherence and structure of this Psalm points us to its message about God. How might this celebration of theological truth suggest a fresh foundation for the believer’s responsibility for creation care? \n\nTuesday 3/4:\nDoers of the Word: How do we apply the Bible today? (Luke Herche) \nFaithful Christians want to apply the Bible to their lives. Sometimes we do this intuitively and sometimes we are left scratching our head. This lecture will explore some of the current models for moving from the Bible to application today\, discussing strengths and weaknesses of each. The goal of this time will be to whet our appetites for being doers of the word and helping others be the same. \nTuesday 3/11:\nThe Passion of the Christ: Two Decades of Controversy & Cultural Impact (Dr. Pearce Durst) \n\nThe Passion of the Christ ignited a firestorm of debate upon its release in 2004\, and its impact continues to resonate two decades later. By exploring how controversies around Mel Gibson’s film continue to shape discussion about faith\, violence\, history\, and representation in cinema\, this talk prepares us to appreciate and critically evaluate this and other films that represent Jesus of Nazareth.

SUMMARY:A Taste of Seminary
DESCRIPTION:A Taste of Seminary: Christian Perspectives on Faith\, Culture\, and Contemporary Issues \nTuesdays\, October 22 through November 12\, 2024.\nLocation: Champaign Public Library \n\n— \nOCT 22: Chesterton at 150: Why Read His Work Today? Dr. Melody Green — Friends Conference Room 215 \nBorn in 1874\, the enduring popularity of G. K. Chesterton is\, for many\, an enigma. While he is best known today as the creator of Father Brown\, a crime-solving priest in an ongoing BBC Television series\, he was also an apologist\, a journalist\, a poet\, a playwright\, and a novelist. This talk will serve as an introduction to some of his enduring ideas\, as well as some of his best-known work.  \nOCT 29: Pascal for a Post-Secular Age. Dr. Emily Wenneborg — Friends Conference Room 215. \nOur cultural moment both reveres and mistrusts the certainties of science\, welcomes every form of spiritual expression except traditional Christianity\, and yearns to find purpose in pain. How does the life and work of Blaise Pascal\, a seventeenth-century Frenchman\, help us navigate the pressures and possibilities we face today? \nNOV 5: Insomniac America: A Theological Perspective on Sleep. Dr. Todd T. W. Daly — Busey Bank Conference Room 222 \nSleep seems to have gotten very complicated in our modern era\, as cases of insomnia continue to rise. What is the difference between sleep hygiene and sleep as a spiritual discipline\, and what does Christian theology have to say about sleep and sleeplessness? \nNOV 12: Paradise Lost: A Contemporary Litmus Test for Our Moral Condition. Dr. Pearce Durst — Robeson Pavilion Room A \nA contemporary Christian’s reading of Puritan John Milton’s Paradise Lost\, where devilish actions luster with attractiveness and godly actions prove perplexing\, serves as a litmus test that offers deeper insight into the fallen human condition. Come see where you stand during this discussion which aims to bring this classic epic poem into our contemporary conversation.
